How To Use Google’s Keyword Planner Tool


In my last post, I shared best keyword tools for bloggers and Google keyword planner was listed first. Google is famous for its free services and tools. We use Google search, Gmail, calendar, Google drive and many other Google services for free. Keyword planner is a similar tool which is provided by Google for free. It is part of Google AdWords tools.

Google AdWords keyword tool was used by many webmasters to get traffic and CPC information. Google has added some further features to AdWords keyword research tool and moved it to keyword planner.

What Is Google Keyword Planner?

Google keyword planner is the combination of keyword tool and traffic estimators. Now you can use both these tools in single keyword planner. With keyword planner you can search for keywords, find ad group ideas and even check the performance of keyword list.

It also provides facility to merge lists to find new keyword ideas which is a new addition in this tool. You can check the estimate and performance of your ad campaigns. The best thing about keyword planner is that everything structured.

Keyword research:


Keywords are important part of seo. Every new post starts with keyword research. Google planner allows you to find keywords ideas with traffic estimation and other details. You can add 50 keywords and one target site to get the details. 

You can also find keyword for your new campaigns so that you can get extra success with these campaigns.


Statistics and traffic estimation:


You can not only find keywords but it can also tell you total number of searches and competition. You can also get CPC details and estimate generated traffic by your keyword campaign. Set filter like country, language or exclude keywords to get more suitable keywords.

How To Use Google Keyword Planner?

You need to sign up for Google AdWords tool. After creating a Google account, you can login to AdWords tools. Click on “tools and analysis” and select Keyword planner. It will redirect you to the keyword planner main page. If you already have an account then clicks here to go to keyword planner.

On main page, three options are available.

1. Search For Keywords And Ad Group Ideas:

You can add 50 keywords and one target site or choose a keyword category. Then click on ideas and it will produce a complete list of suggestions.


Setting targets:


Google let you customize your keyword research based on country, languages and search networks. Setting targets not only make your result accurate but also increases the relevancy of your campaigns.

You can choose more than one countries to estimate the traffic.
Change language to get specific results.
Setting search engine preferences helps you to get results from Google as well as other search engines.
Negative keywords allow you to remove specific terms from the search results.

Customizing your search:

Customizing let you set certain filters like CPC, average searches etc.
Average CPC: Find keywords for limited cost per click.
Valued search volume: Limit your result for an average monthly search.
Keyword competition: Narrow your keywords based on competition.
Include/Exclude keywords: Add or remove keywords by specifying keywords to exclude or include.
Exclude keywords already in your account: Remove keywords which are already saved in your account.

2. Enter Or Upload Keywords To See How They Perform:

Usually data-planners are dealing with large data so it is better to use this option if you are having a long keyword list. You can add up to 100 keywords manually or upload a CSV file with keywords limit of 10000. You can also set targeting for keywords same as in “Search Keywords and Ad Group Ideas”.


There are further two options “Get estimates” or “Get search volume”. “Get search volume” displays total search volume, competition and CPC. “Get estimation” give you detail estimate about budgets, bids, impressions, CTR and cost of keywords.


3. Multiple Keyword Lists:

If you are having multiple data files then you can use this option. It is also possible to combine multiple lists using this tool. For example, if you want to estimate keywords separately as well as want a mash up estimation then you can enter them in the form of list and get estimated results.


Same targeting options can be used which are describes in “Search for keywords and ad group ideas”.


How To Get Traffic Estimation And Review The Plan?

Getting traffic estimate can help you determine amount of traffic for different bids and budgets. You can change your bid option to check the estimated clicks and impressions. Once you have done keyword research using any of three methods as explained earlier in the above section “How to use Google keyword planner?” you can get estimation of keywords and save them as per your need.


Adjust the bid range and it will build a graph for max CPC and traffic estimate for selected keywords.

To get detailed estimate, enter a bid and daily budget in the boxes above the graph.

You will get estimation details for your ad group ideas. You can see clicks, impression, average position, cost, CTR and average CPC as per your selected budget and bid.


Additional Options:

There are many options which can be used to make data plans more clear.

Rearranging the data:

Data can be rearranged based on average monthly searches, competition, average CPC, impressions or cost. You can arrange the data in ascending or descending order.

Making Ad group:

You can also make ad group by adding suggestions from keyword ideas pressing >> button.
After making ad groups you can directly estimate the bids and budget of your project.

Saving the data:

Data can be saved to your account or you can download it in CSV format. To save the data, click on “Save to account” and to download the data click on “download”.

Conclusion

With first option, you can do keyword research and find keyword ideas for your Adwords campaign. Second option allows you to upload multiple keyword files and estimate them with a single click. Third option is recommended to merge keyword files.
